Major Portland affordable housing project reaches construction milestone

The final construction piece of the Bellwether, an $88 million housing project, was installed during a topping-off ceremony.

The Bellwether, located on Elm Street in the Bayside neighborhood, will include 201 affordable housing units and is expected to open next summer, according to Avesta Housing.

The apartments are open to people who earn 60 percent or less of the area median income.

Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau said cutting five months from the construction timeline is a win both financially and for families who will eventually call The Bellwether home.
